Clinical Study to Evaluate the Efficacy, Safety, and Tolerance of Eel Calcitonin Derivatives (Elcatonin) in Patient with Osteoporosis



Abstract
The authors have conducted a clinical study to evaluate the efficacy, tolerance and safety with newly developed Eel calcitonin derivatives (Elcationin) to thirty-one cases of the patients of osteoporosis durng six months from July 1987 to Dec. 1987.
Treatment for the patients was done with one ample of Elcationin (10U) I.M. twicely for a week. Tctal
period of administration was 12 weeks. Results were as follows:
1. Out of 31 cases, male were 4, female 27 and predominant age group was 50-79 years old, 27. 2. Major indications were lower back pain 17, knee joint pain 8, due to osteoporosis. 3. Overall efficacy was 54.8% at first week, and 90.3% within three weeks. 4. Side effect was seen in only one patient, navsea.
5. There was no significant difference in pre- and post-treatment laboratory check.
Conclusion: The Elacation I.M. was very effective and well tolerated for treatment of osteoporosis and side effect was few and generally mild.
